John Thelwell

John brings a wealth of experience from different disciplines. Having started his equestrian career in racing, then moving to show jumping and turning to eventing in 1981. Whilst staying in touch with those eventing years by helping several current riders, John is very happy being involved once more with his favorite discipline of show jumping.

For seven years John rode as an amateur jockey whilst working as assistant trainer in Middleham and Newmarket and also working on a stud. He became known as a stylish horseman for in his own words “I wasn’t much of a jockey but I could get most things round!”

The show jumping period included successes at County shows and Hickstead, but was geared more towards producing young horses. This included producing and selling youngsters for European champion Malcolm Pyrah and Olympic rider Tim Grubb

The move to eventing occurred from a chance meeting with the magnificent owners John and Maryann Huntridge. Within a couple of years successes started to flow at national and then international level, including European championships, Badminton, Burghley and all the major national events. It is as a coach that John is most confident and proud of his achievements. His pupils have been successful in Senior European Championships, Junior European Championships, and all the national three day events including the winner of the National Junior Championships. He was also lucky enough to train the winner of the Junior Foxhunter Final at Wembley (an 11 year old boy on a 13.2hh pony!)
